The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has introduced new restrictions on student social activities, citing the need to prioritise campus safety after the killing of a guest during a departmental event.

In a statement issued by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, the university said the measure was taken to prevent a recurrence of the September 12 tragedy that claimed the life of businessman Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos.

Nweze was fatally stabbed during a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, an event the university said was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community.

In light of what happened, management has directed that all social events on campus must now take place only in the daytime, under the supervision of the University Security Unit,” the statement read. “No event of this nature will be allowed to continue past 6:00 p.m. on any of our campuses.”

The institution described the incident as both “tragic and avoidable,” stressing that it would continue to strengthen security arrangements in order to guarantee a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Egwu reaffirmed that the university’s decision was not only a disciplinary measure but also part of broader efforts to balance academic life with safe social engagement on campus.
