The opening night of the 2025 CGC Volleyball Premier League delivered fireworks as Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) shocked defending champions Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Spikers at the indoor sports hall of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
The high-octane clash lived up to its billing, with NSCDC drawing first blood by claiming the opening two sets 25-22 and 31-29, showcasing both resilience and tactical discipline.
However, the champions rallied impressively, storming back to win the third and fourth sets 25-20, 25-20, forcing the tie into a deciding fifth set.
In the tense decider, NSCDC held their nerve and maintained composure under pressure to seal a 15-11 victory, inflicting a rare defeat on the CNS Spikers and signaling their intent to be major title contenders this season.
“This win means a lot to us. Beating the champions in the opening game sets the tone, but the league is a marathon, not a sprint. We are focused on consistency,” said an elated NSCDC coach after the match.
In the women’s fixtures, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) ladies, former champions, proved too strong for Benue Queens, cruising to a straight-sets victory (25-12, 25-17, 25-14). With their superior firepower and organized play, the team laid down an early marker for their title ambitions.
Not to be outdone, the NSCDC women’s team also impressed with a commanding 3-0 win over Anambra Queens (25-20, 25-13, 25-11). Their clinical performance in attack and defense highlighted a squad brimming with confidence and determination.
“We are taking it one game at a time, but our goal is clear—we want the title back,” said one of the NSCDC women’s key players.
