The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has formally withdrawn from all previous agreements aimed at resolving lingering disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This move on Sunday further plunged the party into internal crisis despite reconciliatory efforts by the party leadership
In a strongly worded press statement on Sunday, titled “PDP Crisis: My Position,” Wike accuses top party leaders of dishonesty and failing to honor various peace accords.
He asserts that persistent breaches of agreement and a lack of trust among key stakeholders were at the heart of the party’s turmoil.
Wike specifically blames Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for what he described as the party’s inability to adhere to resolutions, calling him “the chief culprit” in the ongoing internal strife.
“The non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and he was the chief culprit of this anomaly,” the statement read.
The former Rivers State governor traced the root of the crisis to post-2023 general election divisions, noting that efforts to rebuild unity had repeatedly been undermined.
He cites several meetings, including a G5 gathering in Lagos and another at the Abuja residence of former Senate President Bukola Saraki, where key resolutions were adopted but allegedly disregarded by some members.
Wike highlightes the case of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, whose affirmation as the party’s National Secretary, in line with a Supreme Court judgment, was agreed upon but subsequently violated.
He alleged that Makinde orchestrated moves within the PDP National Secretariat to sideline Anyanwu by promoting the Deputy National Secretary as acting National Secretary.
“To give credence to this farce, a letter was written by the Deputy National Secretary calling for a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC),” Wike said.
He also references a controversy over the confirmation letter of the PDP’s Anambra State governorship candidate, which was signed by Senator Anyanwu and the acting National Chairman but was later countered by a rebuttal issued by the National Publicity Secretary.
According to Wike, this rebuttal was orchestrated by Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mba.
Wike further cities the aborted zonal elective congress of the PDP in Jos on May 24, 2025, which was invalidated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) due to the use of an unauthorized signatory.
INEC had declined to attend the congress because the invitation letter was not signed by Senator Anyanwu, whom the commission recognizes as the legitimate National Secretary.
Describing these developments as “distasteful, provocative and annoying,” Wike declared his intention to withdraw from all previous agreements and continue the struggle for justice within the party.
“I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained,” he stated.
The latest development marks a significant setback for reconciliation efforts within the PDP and signals deeper fissures that may impact the party’s cohesion ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
