Reps Unveil 86 Constitution Review Bills, Seek Public Input

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has released a summarized compendium of 86 constitution amendment bills currently under consideration.

The move marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional reform efforts and aims to foster deeper public engagement in the process.

Chairman of the Committee and Deputy Speaker of the 10th House Benjamin Kalu, made the announcement at a press conference in Abuja, on Wednesday accompanied by other members of the committee.

He explained that the compendium offers a comprehensive overview of the proposed amendments, complete with explanatory notes, long titles, and detailed descriptions of each bill.

The proposed bills are grouped into 13 thematic areas, including Electoral Reforms, Judicial Reforms, Local Government Reform, Security and Policing, Devolution of Powers, Traditional Institutions, Fiscal Reforms, and Citizenship and Indigeneship.

Other areas include the strengthening of institutions, inclusive governance, human rights, and proposals for the creation of new states and local governments.

Kalu revealed that the goal of the compendium is to equip Nigerians with accessible information on the legislative proposals ahead of nationwide zonal public hearings.

These hearings, scheduled to hold across 12 centers in the six geopolitical zones, are designed to allow citizens, civil society groups, traditional rulers, professional bodies, and other stakeholders to scrutinize the bills, seek clarifications, and offer constructive feedback.

Public hearings in the three northern zones will take place from July 11 to 13, while the southern zones will host their sessions from July 18 to 20. A final National Public Hearing is scheduled for July 21 in Abuja.

“Your contributions and inputs are crucial to the success of this constitutional review process. Together, we can create a more inclusive and effective constitution that reflects the aspirations of our great nation,” he said.
