The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, has called for the adoption of Afrocentric approaches to address the pressing challenges confronting the African continent.

Speaking in Abuja, at the close of a five-day capacity-building programme for members of the Malawian Parliament, Professor Sulaiman said Africa must look inward for solutions tailored to its unique realities, rather than continue to rely on Western development models that may not align with local needs.

“African problems require African solutions—solutions driven by unity, love, and a deep understanding of our own context,” he said.

The intensive training, hosted at the permanent site of NILDS, featured expert-led sessions in parliamentary administration and legislative best practices. It drew commendation from the Deputy Speaker of the Malawian Parliament, Honourable Madalitso Fred Kazombo, who described the programme as both enriching and transformative.

Professor Sulaiman thanked the Malawian delegation for their trust in Nigeria’s legislative capacity and expressed commitment to deepening bilateral parliamentary relations between the two countries.

The week-long programme concluded with a presentation of certificates to the visiting lawmakers, following their familiarisation tour of the Nigerian National Assembly.
