Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with parts of Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna States, have been warned to prepare for possible heavy flooding between July 31 and August 4, 2025.

The National Flood Early Warning System (FEWS), under the Federal Ministry of Environment, issued the alert on Wednesday, identifying several locations across the FCT that are at high risk due to anticipated intense rainfall. The areas in the FCT likely to be affected include Asokoro, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Damagaza, Garki 1 and 2, Guzape, Wuse 1 and 2, Gwarinpa, Nyanya, Central Business District (CBD), and Kubwa.

Reacting to the warning, the Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the department has placed its Search and Rescue Team on red alert to prevent loss of life or property.

A statement released by the Head, Public Affairs in FEMD, Nkechi Isa quotes the DG of FEMD as saying,

“We are closely monitoring the water levels and are fully prepared to respond to any flooding incidents. I urge residents to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. If you encounter a flooded area, please wait for the water to subside or use an alternative route.”

Engr. Mohammed also called on the public to clear their gutters and drains to ensure the smooth flow of water and reduce the risk of flash floods.

Beyond the FCT, the National Flood Early Warning System also flagged high-risk areas in neighbouring states. In Niger State, the communities of Suleja, Mashegu, Sarkin Pawa, and Rijau are on alert. In Nasarawa State, vulnerable locations include Mararaba, Gidan Rogo, Wamba, Agima, Rukubi, and Odogbo. Meanwhile, in Kaduna State, Zaria, Jaji, Kauru, Kachia, and Buruku have been identified as flood-prone during this period.

Authorities have advised residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant, heed safety warnings, and cooperate with emergency responders where necessary.
