The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have agreed to strengthen cooperation in order to support the Federal Government’s One-Stop-Shop framework across all Free Trade Zones (FTZs).
The understanding was reached during a phone conversation between Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director/CEO of NEPZA, and the NDLEA Chairman/CEO, retired Brigadier General, Buba Marwa, on Monday.
A statement by BEPZA’s spokesperson, Dr. Martins Odeh, says the discussion followed concerns raised by NEPZA regarding reports that some NDLEA officers were allegedly insisting on inspecting all containers bound for certain FTZs.
Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized the importance of aligning government agencies operating within the free trade ecosystem with the One-Stop-Shop model, which is designed to attract investment and revitalize the economy.
“As you know, NEPZA has, for over 30 years, been mandated to license, monitor, regulate and facilitate investment into Nigeria’s Free Trade Zones,” he said. “In recognition of the vital role that sister agencies like NDLEA play in combating drug-related issues, we consider it necessary for the agency to participate in free zone operations whenever required.”
He explained that under the NEPZA Act, the Authority has the responsibility to invite NDLEA for joint inspections whenever suspicions arise, ensuring transparency without disrupting smooth trade operations.
While reaffirming NEPZA’s commitment to eliminating any infractions within the zones, Dr. Ogunyemi commended Gen. Marwa for NDLEA’s proactive leadership in safeguarding the country against drug trafficking.
In his response, the NDLEA boss pledged stronger collaboration with NEPZA, stressing that both agencies must intensify cooperation to deliver on their mandates without interfering with each other’s roles.
“The two agencies must henceforth intensify collaboration to fulfil their mandates without interfering with each other’s work,” Marwa stated.
Both officials agreed to align their operations with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes institutional synergy, integrity, and good corporate governance in service delivery.
