The National Assembly on Monday reaffirmed that democracy has firmly taken root in Nigeria, citing 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule as evidence of its stability.
Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Barrister Kamoru Ogunlana, made the declaration at the induction ceremony for 785 newly recruited staff, held at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja. The new employees, recruited in December 2023, span Grade Levels 8 to 12.
Represented by the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, Engineer Bashir Yero, Ogunlana said Nigeria’s democratic system has continued to thrive without any threat of military intervention, strengthening the legislature as a key democratic institution.
“Our democracy has continued to stabilise, with no threat of military intervention, and the National Assembly as an institution has grown stronger, more professional, and more responsive to the needs of the Nigerian people,” he said.
He described the recruitment as timely, urging the new staff to demonstrate commitment, discipline, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
“Working in the National Assembly is a calling that demands much more than academic qualification or routine service. It requires a deep knowledge of legislative practice and procedures, high moral standards, and strong personal discipline,” he stated.
Ogunlana advised them to acquaint themselves with the mission and vision of the legislature, keep abreast of civic responsibilities, embrace digital skills, and remain loyal to the service of the nation.
On welfare, the Clerk assured that staff interests remain a top priority under his leadership.
“Your salaries are paid promptly. The first 28 days allowance, which you are all entitled to, has been settled. As you settle into your roles, remember that the National Assembly is the symbol of our democracy, and by serving here, you are directly contributing to the strengthening of governance and the consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he added.
The CNA also recalled that, as part of ongoing reforms, management recently assured over 3,000 legislative aides attached to the 469 federal lawmakers of job protection and improved remuneration.
