The All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that its 2027 presidential primaries will remain open to all interested members, despite the widespread endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by key party organs.
APC’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, made this clear on Wednesday during an interactive session with journalists at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
He acknowledged that the party’s leadership — including the National Working Committee, the Progressives Governors Forum led by Governor Hope Uzodinma, and the National Assembly leadership under Senate President Godswill Akpabio — had already thrown their weight behind Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing his “outstanding performance.”
However, Argungu stressed that the ruling party remains committed to internal democracy and would not bar other members from contesting.“We will definitely not close our doors to other presidential aspirants. When the time comes, our timetable will be made known. Anybody who wants to aspire for the presidency under APC will not be denied the opportunity to purchase the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to exercise their franchise,” he said.
The clarification comes amid growing speculation that the APC leadership might move to present Tinubu as a consensus candidate in 2027, shutting out potential challengers.
By affirming that the race will remain open, the party seeks to balance its loyalty to the incumbent president with its pledge to uphold democratic values within its fold.
