The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has sentenced Nigerian-born Finnish politician, Simon Ekpa, to six years imprisonment after finding him guilty of terrorism-related crimes and other offences connected to the Biafran separatist movement.

Ekpa, 40, a former municipal councillor in Lahti, was convicted on charges including participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation, incitement to commit terrorist acts, aggravated tax fraud, and violations of the Lawyers Act. The court ordered him to remain in custody.

According to court findings, Ekpa exploited his social media influence between August 2021 and November 2024 to strengthen separatist groups in Nigeria’s southeast, providing access to weapons, explosives, and ammunition while urging supporters to commit violent crimes.

Judges ruled that his actions helped transform the Biafran cause into a more organised structure with armed factions classified as terrorist organisations.

Ekpa, who denied all charges, was arrested in December 2024 by Finnish authorities. His trial ran across 12 sessions before a three-judge panel unanimously handed down the sentence.

Though four others were initially arrested in connection with the case, charges against them were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Widely known for his controversial broadcasts, Ekpa has long divided opinion within Nigeria and among the diaspora — celebrated by some as a voice of Biafran nationalism but condemned by others as a destabilising force.

Meanwhile, the The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has commended the verdict delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court, https://democracyradio.ng/cds-hails-ekpas-sentencing-reaffirms-militarys-resolve-against-terrorism/describing the ruling as a significant milestone in the international fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
