The United States has approved the release of $32.5 million in funding to the World Food Programme, WFP, Nigeria.
The US embassy in Nigeria in a statement released on its website on Wednesday, says it provides food and nutrition assistance for more than 764,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in conflict-affected regions of Nigeria.
It says insecurity has heightened the risk of hunger and malnutrition in the North-east and North-west of Nigeria.
“With the US Government’s contribution of $32.5 million, the World Food Programme Nigeria will provide food assistance and nutrition support to 764,205 beneficiaries across conflict-affected areas,” the embassy notes.
The support package includes nutrition supplements for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as 43,235 children, delivered through electronic food vouchers
Nigeria has witnessed rising insecurity in recent years, leaving millions displaced and vulnerable to food shortages, particularly in the northern region.
