The Edo State Police Command has pledged to work closely with other security agencies to track down those responsible for the killing of eight operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area.

The operatives, attached to the BUA Cement Factory, were ambushed by suspected kidnappers last week. The attack also led to the abduction of a Chinese expatriate, while four other victims were rescued. Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, who visited the scene on Tuesday, condemned the killings, describing them as “a dastardly act that will not go unpunished.”

“The Edo State Police Command remains steadfast in its duty to protect lives and property and will not relent until criminal elements threatening the peace of the state are identified and made to face justice,” Police Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu quoted Agbonika as saying in a statement.

The tragedy has drawn national attention, with NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, directing the Edo Command and senior officers to console families of the slain operatives and prepare for their burial with full honours.

“Their labour and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Audi said, assuring that the Corps would cover the medical expenses of the injured operatives.

Edo NSCDC spokesperson, Efosa Ogbebor, confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that welfare arrangements for bereaved families are being handled by the Corps’ national headquarters.

Meanwhile, security around the BUA Cement Factory and its environs has been strengthened, while efforts continue to secure the release of the abducted expatriate.
