Nigeria’s sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, delivered another world-class performance on Monday, winning the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The 2022 world champion and former record holder clocked 12.29 seconds at the National Stadium, narrowly missing out on gold to Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to victory in a new national record of 12.24 seconds. The United States’ Grace Stark completed the podium in 12.34 seconds, while her compatriot Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44 seconds.

Amusan had earlier underlined her title credentials in the semifinals, where she powered to a dominant 12.36 seconds (-0.2) to defeat Nadine Visser of the Netherlands (12.45s) and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (12.51s). Her semifinal time was the fastest of the round, setting the tone for her medal-winning run in the final.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) praised Amusan’s achievement, describing her as a source of inspiration and national pride.

“Tobi Amusan has made Nigeria proud once again. Winning silver at the World Championships is no small feat, and doing so with such class shows her world-class ability and resilience,” said Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC. “She remains a symbol of hope, determination, and excellence for our nation. The entire country stands tall in celebration of her achievement.”
