Ahead of the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has called on political actors to conduct their campaigns with civility.
The group is also urging contestants to focus on issues that directly affect the people rather than resorting to name-calling and divisive rhetoric.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, jointly signed by its interim President, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, and Interim Secretary, Princess Ekwi Ajide, the group expressed concern that mudslinging and propaganda could further heighten tensions as election day draws closer.
“As the political atmosphere begins to heat up, we call on political actors, parties, and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns that focus squarely on the needs of Ndi Anambra — from education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, to job creation,” LAJA stated.
“Our people deserve a campaign season rooted in ideas, vision, and policy direction rather than mudslinging, propaganda or divisive rhetoric.” The group added.
Beyond politics, the body of Anambra-born journalists also raised alarm over the rise in insecurity in the state, particularly allegations of misconduct involving members of some state task forces and security outfits.
“These incidents have not only created fear among residents but have also dented public confidence in institutions set up to safeguard lives and property,” the statement read.
The group urged the Anambra State Government to ensure transparency and professionalism in the recruitment, training, and deployment of security personnel, stressing that the infiltration of unfit or abusive elements into such outfits must be avoided.
“The process must be transparent, merit-based, and guided by professionalism to prevent the infiltration of criminal elements or those prone to abuse of power. The state owes it to its citizens to ensure that those entrusted with security responsibilities are truly fit for such sensitive roles,” it added.
LAJA further demanded justice for victims of unlawful actions by security operatives, insisting that accountability must remain the guiding principle.
“Impunity must never be allowed to fester, and a clear message must be sent that no individual or group is above the law,” the statement noted.
Reiterating its role in strengthening democratic accountability, LAJA pledged to continue holding leaders to account and amplifying the voices of Ndi Anambra in the political process.
“We believe that with collective effort, Anambra can set a benchmark for responsible politics and effective governance,” the journalists concluded.
