The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against activist and former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, alongside tech giants Meta (Facebook) Inc. and X Corp Inc., over posts deemed denigrating to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The suit, dated September 16, 2025, was filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja by the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. M. B. Abubakar. The Federal Government, through the DSS, alleged that Sowore’s posts violated Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, as well as Sections 59 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act.
The two social media platforms where the statements were published—X Corp and Meta—are also listed as defendants in the case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025.
Sowore’s posts, dated August 25 and 26, followed President Tinubu’s official visit to Brazil, during which he declared that his administration had successfully eradicated corruption in Nigeria. One of the counts cited his Facebook post of August 26:
“That you, Omoyele Sowore, adult, male, on or about the 26th day of August, 2025, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did use your official Facebook page, Omoyele Sowore, to send out a message/ post as: ‘THIS CRIMINAL @ OFFICIAL PBAT ACTUALLY WENT TO BRAZIL TO STATE THAT THERE IS NO MORE CORRUPTION UNDER HIS REGIME IN NIGERIA. WHAT AUDACITY TO LIE SHAMELESSLY’, which you know the said message/post to be false but posted it for the purpose of causing a breakdown of law and order in the country…”
Confirming the development in a Facebook post on Tuesday, Sowore wrote:
“The State Security Service, alias @OfficialDSSNG today filed a 5-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and myself. They claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I have somehow committed a set of ‘novel’ offences they invented and spread across five counts. It’s hard to believe there’s anyone sensible left in these offices that should be making Nigeria work. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow.”
