The Federal Ministry of Environment has reiterated its determination to phase out ozone-depleting substances in refrigeration and aerosols while promoting safer, climate-friendly alternatives.

Speaking in Abuja at an event to mark World Ozone Day 2025, Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Lawal, said the ministry is working with local and international partners to drive the transition. He highlighted ongoing efforts such as technician training, stronger regulations, and technology transfer with neighbouring countries.

The Minister also stressed that the Renewed Hope Agenda integrates gender inclusivity and skills acquisition into environmental programmes to ensure broader participation in sustainable development.

Former Minister of Environment and Emir of Nasarawa, His Royal Highness Mallam Ibrahim Jibrin, urged Nigerian youths to take ownership of environmental protection and invest their creativity in developing climate-friendly solutions.

On his part, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mallam Mahmud Kambari, represented by Dr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, said the commemoration is a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the ozone layer. He noted that Nigeria has recorded notable achievements under the Montreal Protocol, which guides global action against substances that harm the atmosphere.

World Ozone Day is observed globally every September 16 to raise awareness about the need to protect the ozone layer and ensure a healthier, sustainable environment.
