President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday announced the end of the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, declaring that democratic governance will resume immediately.

With the lifting of the proclamation, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, are expected to return to office on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

Tinubu explained in a statement that the emergency, first declared on March 18, 2025, became necessary following a constitutional impasse between the executive and legislature that brought governance to a halt and threatened public order.

“It became painfully inevitable that to arrest the drift towards anarchy in Rivers State, I was obligated to invoke the powers conferred on me by Section 305 of the Constitution,” the President said.

He commended the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and the people of Rivers State for their support during the emergency, adding that peace and cooperation remain the foundation for democracy to thrive.
