Nigeria constitution review: Lawmakers call for public input

Nigerians have been urged to take part in the national public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution.

The session will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Lawmakers say it will allow citizens to contribute before voting on 86 proposed amendment bills.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, said the process must reflect the will of the people.

> “This Constitution belongs to all Nigerians, and its review must reflect the aspirations of our people,” he said.

He urged citizens and stakeholders to participate fully so that the outcome is people-driven.

The hearing was earlier postponed as it coincided with the national mourning period for former President Muhammadu Buhari.

It follows zonal consultations held in July across 12 centres in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

To guide participants, the House has released a Compendium of 86 Constitution Review Bills, with notes and memoranda available online.

House spokesman Akin Rotimi Jr. said the 10th Assembly is committed to making the process transparent and credible, with citizens’ voices at the centre.
