PDP Postpones Screening of National Convention Aspirants

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, citing “unforeseen circumstances.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, announced the suspension of the exercise, assuring party members that a new date would be communicated soon.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” Fintiri said.

He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a credible, transparent, and hitch-free convention, which is scheduled to hold between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The postponement comes just hours after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman. His declaration has intensified internal tensions within the opposition party.

Earlier, northern PDP stakeholders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship position. However, the endorsement was swiftly rejected by factions loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who argued that the selection process lacked proper consultation.

The PDP had, on October 25, unveiled a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee chaired by Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, a former Ondo State governorship candidate, to vet aspirants for national offices ahead of the convention.
