Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, has called for traditional rulers to be granted constitutional recognition and formally integrated into Nigeria’s national security framework.

Professor Sulaiman made the call during a one-day Policy Dialogue on Regional Security in North Central Nigeria. The event was organised by the Legislative Centre for Security Analysis (LeCeSA) in collaboration with the House of Representatives Committee on Traditional Institutions and UFUK Dialogue. A statement signed by Mohammad Abdulkadri, Media Adviser to the DG, NILDS described the dialogue as a crucial platform for strengthening the role of traditional and religious leaders in addressing the country’s persistent security challenges.

According to him, harnessing the cultural influence and grassroots reach of traditional rulers would greatly enhance efforts to restore peace and stability across the nation.
The event attracted key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the House Committee on Traditional Institutions, Hon. Abdulmumin Ari Mohammed; members of the House of Representatives; military and paramilitary officials; and traditional rulers from Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory.

Discussions centred on the need for strong political will to advance ongoing efforts aimed at granting constitutional responsibilities to traditional rulers, particularly in matters of security and community governance.
