The Federal High Court in Abuja will on Thursday deliver its judgment in the terrorism case involving Nnamdi Kanu, with the session set to be broadcast live across national television.

The court registrar confirmed the live coverage to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday morning, as cameramen from NTA, Channels Television, AIT, TVC and other outlets positioned their equipment inside the courtroom for the historic transmission.

The judgment date was set after Justice James Omotosho formally closed the defence phase of the trial. The decision followed Kanu’s refusal to open his defence, insisting he would not do so under what he described as a repealed law.

Justice Omotosho ruled that Kanu had already used the six days allocated for him to present his defence and had therefore “waived” his right to do so.

He added that the court would have considered granting more time if Kanu had agreed to proceed.

According to the judge, Kanu “having failed to utilise the opportunity given to him to conduct his defence, cannot claim to have been denied the constitutionally guaranteed right to a fair hearing.”
