The Federal Government, through the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee, has scheduled high-level meetings today, Monday, November 24, and Tuesday, November 25, 2025, in a bid to prevent a looming strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Following these talks, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) is expected to convene to determine whether the union will embark on industrial action that could disrupt academic activities nationwide.
A senior NEC member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed scepticism over the timing of the government’s meetings, suggesting possible delay tactics. “They have convened a meeting for Monday and Tuesday. I believe it’s delay tactics. They are trying to delay us from taking action. After their meeting, we will hold a NEC meeting to decide the next line of action,” the source said.
The meetings follow the expiration of ASUU’s ultimatum on Saturday, which had been issued after the suspension of a two-week warning strike on October 22. The union had earlier granted the Federal Government a one-month window to meet its demands.
With universities across the country closely monitoring developments, the outcome of the negotiations will be pivotal in determining the continuity of academic activities in Nigeria’s higher education institutions.
