The Imo and Plateau State Police Commands have imposed a comprehensive ban on the sale, possession, and use of fireworks and knockouts, citing public safety concerns.
In Imo State, the directive was reaffirmed on Sunday via X by Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry. The statement warned, “Anyone found selling, possessing, or using pyrotechnics, whether during public holidays, community events, or private celebrations, will be arrested and prosecuted.”
Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, urged residents to cooperate with security operatives and report illegal activities involving fireworks. He assured the public that “enhanced security measures have been put in place for a safe and peaceful Yuletide,” while appreciating community support in maintaining peace.
Plateau State followed suit, announcing a statewide ban in a Saturday statement by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo. The command stressed that fireworks and knockouts “have been known to create unnecessary panic and disturb public peace.”
Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, called on parents, guardians, and religious leaders to educate children and congregations about the directive, emphasizing that cooperation would ensure “a peaceful and safe environment for all before, during, and after the festive season.”
Both commands pledged strict enforcement of the ban, including regular patrols, targeted operations, and prosecution of violators, highlighting a zero-tolerance approach to activities that could compromise public safety during the holiday period.
