Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, has applauded the Keffi Polo Tournament for strengthening national unity and expanding Nigeria’s sporting potential as the event marked its 10th anniversary in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Barau said polo has continued to serve as a strong unifying force, bringing together Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.

“When you look around, you’ll find people from all parts of the country — Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and others,” he said. “It is a unifying factor that strengthens our bond as a nation while also helping to develop our sporting potential.”

Barau, a regular participant at the annual event, praised the organiser and founder of the Keffi Polo Ranch, Senator Ahmed Wadada, for consistently improving the tournament’s structure and outreach. He recalled that past editions also raised significant funds to support indigent children’s education.

“We are ready to support you, financially and otherwise,” he assured.

Driving Sports Development

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi, described the Keffi Polo Tournament as “a brand in Nigeria,” showcasing how private-sector initiatives can boost sports development.

“What is important is encouraging the youth to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship,” he said. “Our differences are minute compared to the things that unite us. This tournament shows the positive side of our country.”

Ningi commended the Tinubu administration for increasing sports funding in the 2024 and 2025 budgets, saying full implementation could transform the sector.

A Decade of Growth

For Senator Wadada, the 10-year milestone reflects the tournament’s remarkable expansion and global recognition.

“I feel highly elated and fulfilled,” he said. “The presence of this calibre of personalities challenges me to do even more.”

Wadada said he established the Keffi Polo Ranch to introduce polo to his community and expose Nasarawa State to global participation. The tournament now draws players and guests from the UK, Argentina, Dubai, and across Nigeria, including captains of industry, political leaders and traditional rulers.

He also expressed appreciation to the Nasarawa State Government for a decade of consistent support, especially for editions focused on raising funds for educational causes.

A highlight of the closing ceremony was the unveiling of a new pavilion named after George Coumantaros, founder of Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN), in recognition of the company’s long-term support for the Keffi Polo project.

Dignitaries present included Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe and several royal fathers from within and outside the state.
