The Edo State Government has unveiled a Green Revolution agenda aimed at boosting environmental sustainability and tackling the impacts of climate change across the state.
The plan was announced by Dr. Blessing Agbomhere, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Ecological and Climate Change Funding and Management Commission, at a news briefing in Benin City.
Under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership, the state aims to plant at least one million trees over the next four years, marking one of the largest ecological restoration efforts in Edo’s history.
“With the governor’s determination and the support of the people, Edo State is rising. We are ready to revolutionise the green space and restore our ecosystem for the benefit of all,” Dr. Agbomhere said.
Focus on Environmental and Public Health
Dr. Agbomhere highlighted the commission’s mandate to protect the environment and all living organisms.
He stressed that trees are critical for maintaining ecological balance, preventing erosion, and improving air quality.
“Many illnesses are linked to poor environmental conditions. That is why the government is prioritising sanitation, preservation, and ecological remediation,” he added.
Green Revolution Programme and Trust Fund
The Green Revolution Programme, alongside the State Ecological and Climate Trust Fund, is scheduled for formal launch on December 11.
The Trust Fund will encourage contributions from individuals, organisations, and international partners committed to supporting Edo’s environmental transformation.
He highlighted Key components of the initiative to include: Climate-smart agriculture, environmental sanitation and public awareness, conversion of petrol vehicles to CNG and solar systems among others.
Dr. Agbomhere reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to ensuring access to clean water statewide and expressed confidence that, with public participation, Edo State could surpass the one-million-tree target.
The launch of the Green Revolution Programme is expected to be a milestone in the Okpebholo administration’s push for environmental resilience and climate action.
