Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has described the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, as a “rising star from the South East,” praising his growing national influence, maturity, and legislative impact.

Ikpeazu spoke on Friday when Kalu paid him a New Year courtesy visit at his country home in Umuobiakwa, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

Recalling their long-standing relationship, the former governor said they weathered several difficult moments together during his tenure, including Operation Python Dance, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the #EndSARS protests.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughigu said Ikpeazu, noted that Kalu stood by him steadfastly without expecting anything in return.

According to Ikpeazu, Kalu’s rise in national politics is divinely ordained, likening his journey to that of the biblical David, the shepherd boy who became king.

“Talking about our leader, the Deputy Speaker, he has been my brother and my ally through thick and thin. During all the rough patches we experienced, he stood by me without looking for anything in return, and for that I owe him a duty to support and encourage him,” Ikpeazu said.

He added that leadership is sometimes bestowed by divine forces, stressing that Kalu’s emergence fits that pattern.

“Just like David, the little shepherd boy who became king, a good day is heralded by the rising sun. Ben, I am proud of your accomplishments. I support you not only because you are my in-law, but because you are a bright star.”

Ikpeazu commended Kalu’s conduct in the House of Representatives, describing him as a source of pride to Abia State and the South East.

“Each time you preside, you bring maturity and candour. It will not be out of place to say that you are a blessing to the House of Representatives,” he said.

He urged Abians to take pride in Kalu’s achievements and called on his supporters to remain patient, prayerful, and supportive as he navigates national politics.

The former governor also emphasized the need for the South East to nurture and support leaders raised within the region.

“We are where we are today because we have failed to promote the Davids that God has raised among us. God has raised you at a time like this, not just for Abia State, but for the entire Igbo nation,” Ikpeazu said.

He prayed for greater success for the Deputy Speaker, expressing confidence that 2026 would be a fruitful year for him.

Earlier, Kalu congratulated Ikpeazu on his nomination as an ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing the visit as a New Year homage to an elder, leader, and in-law.

“We congratulate you on becoming an ambassador-designate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We pray that this year will be better than the last for you and your household,” Kalu said.

The Deputy Speaker also presented Ikpeazu with a brochure highlighting his legislative achievements over the past two years.
