The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing policies, legislation, and oversight measures that strengthen the welfare, capacity, and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The assurance came as the House joined Nigerians in commemorating the newly designated Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

In a statement by the House Spokesperson, Akin Rotimi Jnr, the legislature paid tribute to officers and men of the Armed Forces, honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of Nigeria’s peace, unity, and sovereignty.

“The gallantry, discipline, and dedication of our military personnel safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and preserve the freedoms enjoyed by citizens,” the statement read.

The House also acknowledged the Armed Forces’ critical role in tackling terrorism, banditry, and other criminal threats, as well as their ongoing support to sister security agencies across the country. It recognised the resilience of serving personnel operating under challenging and dangerous conditions, and highlighted the sacrifices of their families in support of national service.

Speaking on the occasion, Rep. Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, welcomed the Federal Government’s redesignation of the annual commemoration. He said the new title reflects the need to honour fallen heroes while celebrating the bravery, professionalism, and patriotism of serving military personnel.

“National remembrance must go hand in hand with appreciation for those who continue to defend Nigeria’s peace, security, and sovereignty,” Benson said.

The House concluded by urging sustained national unity and collective responsibility, stressing that the sacrifices of fallen heroes should continue to inspire civic duty and patriotism across the country.
