The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to urgently improve the welfare of the armed forces and provide enhanced security equipment to enable them effectively tackle rising insecurity across the country.
The Caucus made the call in a statement on the occasion of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day to honour the sacrifices of past and present military personnel.
They paid tribute to Nigeria’s gallant soldiers who “paid the ultimate prize” in defence of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that the day provides an opportunity for national reflection.
It said January 15 offers “every citizen the opportunity to have an introspection and canvass for harmonious relationships, peaceful coexistence, and national cohesion of all, amid the growing security challenges.”
Acknowledging the increasing spate of insecurity nationwide, the lawmakers commended the armed forces for their courage and dedication in confronting security threats, while urging them not to relent.
“Given the rising trend of insecurity across the country, and cognisant of the courageous efforts of the armed forces in tackling and addressing the menace, the Caucus wishes to admonish our officers and men not to rest on their oars,” the statement said.
The Minority Caucus further assured the military of continued national support, stating that they remain “assured of the prayers and good wishes of all Nigerians at all times, and in all situations.”
Linking insecurity to economic growth and national development, the lawmakers stressed the need for improved welfare schemes and better operational capacity for the military.
The statement urged the Federal Government to “evolve necessary measures towards improving the welfare schemes of the armed forces, and the provision of enhanced security equipment, arms and ammunition” to enable the military “effectively and efficiently curtail, and possibly wipe out the purveyors of varied insecurity in the country.”
The Caucus also pledged legislative support to strengthen national security efforts.
“As a responsible and responsive group of lawmakers, the Caucus pledge to pursue legislative actions, where and when necessary, towards ensuring that the armed forces have all what is needed to guarantee the safety of lives and properties of Nigerians,” it added.
The statement was jointly signed by Minority Leader, Rep. O.K. Chinda; Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. Ali Isa J.C; Deputy Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki; and Deputy Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi.
