Retired Inspectors General of Police have warned that Nigeria could face heightened security vulnerabilities unless the Federal Government urgently increases funding for the Nigeria Police Force.
This comes as the current Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening intelligence, professionalism, and operational efficiency across the Force.

Speaking on Tuesday during a strategic briefing with former police chiefs in Abuja, Egbetokun said the Police Force has undergone major structural upgrades over the past two years.
He revealed that the intelligence unit has been elevated to a full department, reinforcing the Force’s shift toward intelligence-driven policing.

The IGP also disclosed that the legal and medical units have been upgraded to directorates to improve legal oversight, prosecution support, and healthcare delivery for officers.
To expand operational readiness, Egbetokun noted the creation of new area commands and divisions nationwide, as well as an increase in Police Mobile Force squadrons from 79 to 84.
He listed additional reforms including the establishment of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS)—which he said is already recording notable results in states where it is deployed—and compulsory weekly ethics and conduct training now enforced across the country.

According to him, 141,054 officers have been promoted on merit in the last two years, a move he described as key to strengthening fairness and motivation within the Force.
Responding on behalf of the retired police chiefs, former IGP Mohammed Abubakar commended the reform efforts but stressed that adequate funding remains crucial.

He appealed to the President to ensure the Police receive the resources needed “to take their lead position in national security,” warning that reforms may fall short without proper support.
The retired IGPs pledged continued collaboration with the current leadership, describing the meeting as an opportunity to share experience and technical knowledge for improved policing.
