The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the conduct of Saturday’s area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reflects growing improvements in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Speaking during field monitoring in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), INEC Chairman Josh Amupitan said election materials arrived early at polling units and voting had remained largely peaceful across the territory.

He said the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was performing efficiently and confirmed that results from polling units would be transmitted electronically to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in line with existing laws.

Mr Amupitan added that credible area council elections are important for strengthening trust in grassroots governance, noting that the process also serves as a foundation as the country looks ahead to the 2027 general elections.
