World Leaders Pressure Iran as Ceasefire Nears Collapse

By Arinzechi Chukwunonso

Global leaders have intensified pressure on Iran to de-escalate tensions and return to diplomacy, as a fragile Middle East ceasefire edges closer to breaking point.

The renewed urgency follows a fresh exchange of fire between Iran and the United States near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route. The situation further deteriorated after the United Arab Emirates reported being targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks for the first time since the truce was declared nearly a month ago.

Leaders across Europe have called for restraint. Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron, and Keir Starmer urged Iran to return to the negotiating table and avoid further destabilizing the region. Saudi Arabia also joined the call, advocating immediate diplomatic efforts to restore peace.

Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate. The United States said it had engaged Iranian vessels in the Gulf, while Iran denied the claims and accused the US of causing civilian casualties. Attacks on UAE energy facilities, particularly in Fujairah, have heightened fears over the security of critical oil infrastructure.

Iran remains firm in its position on controlling the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint for global oil supply. US President Donald Trump has pushed for reopening the route, proposing a plan known as “Project Freedom” to escort commercial ships—though details remain unclear and Iran has rejected the move.

Global markets are already reacting. Oil prices have surged by more than five percent, raising concerns about economic strain worldwide and adding political pressure ahead of elections in the United States.

Beyond the Gulf, tensions are also rising in Lebanon, where clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah threaten another ceasefire, further deepening regional instability.

With diplomacy stalled and hostilities increasing, world leaders warn that time is running out to prevent a wider conflict.
