Reports say the former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, slumped on Tuesday while accessing his office and is currently receiving medical care in Abuja.

According to a statement on Wednesday by his media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, the incident was caused by complications from an untreated knee injury.

Maina lost his balance, fell, and hit his head on a staircase before being attended to by medical personnel.

“Dr Abdulrasheed Maina slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to access his office premises,” Ekwe said.

“The fall resulted from complications from a knee injury, causing him to lose balance and hit his head on the staircase. Medical personnel promptly administered first aid and rushed him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent care.”

Doctors are closely monitoring Maina’s condition. His family has appealed for privacy, asking the public for prayers and understanding during this critical time.

A preliminary assessment indicated that an air ambulance evacuation may be arranged if his condition does not stabilise.

Maina is widely known for his controversial tenure as head of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms and the high-profile corruption case that followed.

In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him of money laundering involving N2.1 billion linked to pension funds, sentencing him to eight years in prison.

He appealed the conviction, but the Court of Appeal upheld the sentence in May 2023, including the forfeiture of assets tied to the case.

Maina was released from Kuje Correctional Centre on February 25, 2025, after serving part of his sentence, following statutory remission for good conduct.

Since his release, Maina has kept a low profile, though his activities continue to attract public attention due to the scale of the pension scandal.
