Chairman of Abia Warriors Football Club, Coach John Obuh, says the Umuahia-based side is strategically preparing for a successful outing both in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and on the continental stage, with strong administrative backing and a reinforced squad.

Obuh, who remains a respected figure in Nigerian football history as the first Abia State-born coach to win a continental tournament, spoke during the NPFL Annual General Meeting and draws in Abuja. He highlighted the club’s transfer strategy and technical stability, as well as the vital role of state government support in their growing ambitions.

“We made about 10 signings because we returned about five or thereabouts,” Obuh explained. “We didn’t want to flush out too many of our old players. We believe in maintaining some continuity, especially after a strong domestic campaign.”

He noted that the team faced some contractual and transfer-related challenges with standout performers from last season, but said most of the issues had been addressed.

“Once a player puts up a good performance, there’s always pressure — either for a better deal or a move abroad. A few of our key players are moving on, but we’ve managed the transition well,” he added. “That’s football — some will stay, some will go.”

Obuh reaffirmed the club’s confidence in Head Coach Imama Amapakabo, a seasoned tactician and former national team assistant coach, who continues to lead the technical bench into a defining season.

“Yes, our coach, Imama Amapakabo, is still very much with us,” Obuh confirmed. “We’ve put in place structures and resources that weren’t available in previous seasons. Competing at the continental level isn’t easy, so we are doing everything possible to support the technical crew fully.”

He expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, for its unwavering commitment to the club’s development, especially as they step onto the African stage.

“We want to sincerely appreciate the governor, the deputy governor, and the commissioner for youth. Their support has been massive,” he said. “The government has been up and doing to make sure we approach the continental challenge with 100% preparation.”

With their first-ever continental appearance looming, and a new NPFL season set to kick off soon, Abia Warriors appear focused, motivated, and better equipped — both on and off the pitch
