The Indoor Sports Hall of Package B, MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, came alive on Saturday as the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) held its much-anticipated elective congress.
Delegates, stakeholders, and rugby enthusiasts witnessed a seamless and transparent election that reaffirmed Ademola Are’s leadership as he was re-elected unopposed as President of the Federation.
Are, who secured all 13 delegate votes, will now serve another four-year term at the helm of Nigerian rugby. In the vice-presidential race, Iyorhe Grace emerged victorious with 11 votes, defeating Mrs. Chinonye Daphey Aliyu, who polled one vote.
The event, which began in earnest by 9 a.m., was characterized by a charged yet cordial atmosphere, as delegates and contestants displayed unity and enthusiasm for the sport’s progress.

Speaking after his swearing-in, Are expressed gratitude to past presidents, board members, and stakeholders for their contributions to the development of rugby in Nigeria. He reaffirmed his commitment to inclusivity, grassroots development, and innovation in steering the federation toward global competitiveness.
“We’ve come to understand that development is the foundation of progress,” Are said. “We’ve already invested heavily in coaching programs — and we plan to do even more. Beyond that, we’re working to introduce rugby into the NUGA Games, strengthen the national rugby league, and launch the Sevens Circuit. Discussions are ongoing with potential sponsors to further sustain our projects.”
He described the newly elected board as “a blend of experience, capacity, and passion,” emphasizing that the next four years would focus on building a robust structure capable of driving sustainable growth across all regions.
Are also announced plans to organize para-military rugby competitions and expand youth participation nationwide, highlighting the NRFF’s commitment to broad-based talent development and gender inclusion.
