The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire outbreak at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, which claimed lives and affected several organisations.

In a condolence message, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of NSITF, Barr. Oluwaseun Faleye, sympathised with the bereaved families as well as institutions housed in the building, including the Federal Inland Revenue Service, United Capital Plc, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Afriland Properties.

“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, United Capital Plc, UBA, Afriland Properties, and all organisations and colleagues affected,” he stated.

Faleye also commended emergency responders and Lagos State authorities for their courage and swift action in containing the incident.

To cushion the impact on affected workers, NSITF announced that it has activated its Lagos support desk to liaise with employers, next of kin and relevant authorities, ensuring that eligible employees and their families can promptly access relief under the Employees’ Compensation provisions.

According to the Fund, case officers are already on ground to guide employers and families through incident reporting, claims documentation, and the delivery of benefits, including support for dependants and rehabilitation where applicable.

“This solemn moment is a reminder of what NSITF stands for in times of workplace tragedy. We exist to provide a national safety net for employees and their families when occupational injuries, illnesses or fatalities occur, and to support prevention through better workplace safety practices,” the NSITF boss said.

Faleye urged all employers to strengthen safety and emergency protocols, particularly in high-rise buildings, report all incidents promptly to the NSITF, and ensure that their organisations are duly registered and compliant with Employees’ Compensation obligations.

“These measures save lives, reduce risk and ensure that relief reaches those who need it most,” he added.

On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of the NSITF, Faleye extended heartfelt condolences to all affected families and institutions, praying for the repose of the souls of the departed.

He further assured that the Fund will continue to work with the Federal Government and Lagos State authorities on measures to prevent a recurrence and protect Nigerian workers.
