CAN Urges Churches to Exercise Caution in Organising Gatherings at Christmas

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states has advised church leaders to exercise caution and wisdom in organising gatherings during the Yuletide season.

Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern states, Rev. Joseph Hayab, made the call on Wednesday, during a visit to St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, scene of the deadly terrorist attack in June 2022 that left at least 41 worshippers dead.

Rev. Hayab said churches in Northern Nigeria have adopted precautionary measures to protect worshippers, noting that security agencies cannot be present everywhere at all times.

“The Bible teaches us to apply wisdom in everything we do. Given the security situation, church leaders must know when to meet, where to meet, and how to meet, so that lives are not put at risk,” he said.

He stressed that CAN is supporting security agencies through vigilance and responsible decisions by church leaders and members.

“We are taking steps, but we must also help the security agencies. They are human beings and cannot see everything. By applying wisdom, we are protecting ourselves and supporting them,” Hayab stated.

During the visit, the CAN chairman distributed food items to survivors of the Owo church attack and victims of communal violence from Gbalegi community in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Recalling the 2022 attack, Hayab said the trauma remains deep, with some victims losing limbs while others are permanently paralysed.

Meanwhile, suspects arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the Owo attack are currently facing trial at a High Court in Abuja.
