Cowrie, AJ Sharks Claim Rugby Schools 7s Tournament

Cowrie RFC Men and AJ Sharks Women have emerged champions of the inaugural Ronald Chagoury Rugby School 7s Tournament, hosted at Rugby School Nigeria in partnership with the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF).

The one-day event in Lekki brought together nine teams and delivered a vibrant spectacle of speed, skill, and emerging rugby talent on the pristine Rugby School pitch in Eko Atlantic City.

It also signaled a renewed commitment to grassroots development and the discovery of Nigeria’s next generation of rugby stars.

Cowrie, AJ Sharks Dominate Finals

Cowrie RFC claimed the maiden men’s crown with an emphatic 38–0 win over AJ Sharks while AJ Sharks Women then produced an equally dominant performance, defeating Cowrie Women 38–0 to secure the women’s title, highlighting the rapid rise of female rugby in the country.

A Boost for Grassroots Rugby

Azeez Ladipo, NRFF General Manager and tournament organiser, hailed the competition as a milestone:

“The Ronald Chagoury Cup marks the beginning of a bigger vision rebuilding domestic rugby culture from the ground up. Our home-based players are hungry and talented. With tournaments like this, we are creating a structured pathway for their growth. More editions will follow next year.”

He also commended Rugby School Nigeria for its collaboration and support.

Dr. Adam England, Principal of Rugby School Nigeria, praised the quality of play:

“The standards were impressive, especially in the women’s games. We look forward to hosting future editions with increased Rugby School involvement. This partnership with the NRFF is vital for sustainable rugby development in Nigeria.”

Plans for Expansion

Buoyed by strong sponsorship, volunteer support, and professional officiating, organisers say future editions will feature more teams, stronger women’s representation, deeper grassroots scouting and increased corporate backing.
