The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peace and tolerance across ethnic and religious lines as the country celebrates Christmas and prepares for the New Year.

In a goodwill message to mark the festive season, General Oluyede described Christmas as a period of love, sacrifice, hope and renewal, saying it provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on shared humanity and collective national responsibility.

“Christmas is a season that embodies love, sacrifice, hope and renewal,” he said. “It offers us a solemn opportunity to reflect on our shared humanity, our collective responsibilities as a nation and our unwavering commitment to peace, unity and national progress.”

The defence chief thanked Nigerians for their resilience, patriotism and continued support for the Armed Forces, despite the security challenges facing the country. He said public trust and cooperation with the military remain critical to achieving sustainable peace and security.

“The trust, cooperation and synergy between the military and the citizenry are indispensable to the attainment of sustainable peace and security,” General Oluyede said.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to defending the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and democratic institutions, assuring citizens that the military remains resolute in carrying out its constitutional mandate.

General Oluyede also paid tribute to troops deployed across various theatres of operation during the festive period, praising their courage, discipline and professionalism.
“Even during this sacred season, our gallant troops remain on duty, confronting diverse threats to our collective peace and security, while others celebrate with their loved ones,” he said, adding that the nation owes them “an immeasurable debt of gratitude.”

The defence chief reassured military personnel that their welfare remains a top priority, with ongoing efforts to improve living and working conditions, healthcare, accommodation and the timely payment of allowances, as well as sustained support for families of fallen heroes.

He urged members of the Armed Forces to remain disciplined, professional and loyal to the Constitution, guided by values of peace, love, selflessness and service to the nation.

Calling on Nigerians to use the festive period to promote peaceful coexistence, General Oluyede said unity remains the foundation for a stable and prosperous country.

“Our diversity remains our strength, and our collective resolve is the foundation upon which a secure, stable and prosperous Nigeria will be built,” he said.

General Oluyede wished Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year.
