The 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba kicked off in spectacular fashion on Sunday, with the rugby sevens event delivering fast-paced action, hard tackles, and dazzling tries from the country’s finest U-15 players. Both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments served up thrilling contests, setting the stage for a blockbuster semi-final lineup.

Defending champions Edo State underlined their credentials in Pool A, opening their campaign with a 15–0 win over Ogun State before edging Abia State 5–0 in a tense battle. With two victories and no points conceded, Edo topped the pool unbeaten. Abia bounced back with a 12–0 win over Ogun to seal second place and a semi-final berth.

In Pool B, hosts Delta State thrilled the home crowd with a commanding 28–0 victory against Rivers State. Their fluid attacking play and strong defensive organization made them one of the standout teams of the day. Despite the defeat, Rivers advanced as group runners-up.

In the Boys category’ Kano State dominated Pool A with explosive rugby, scoring 40 unanswered points across their matches to send a strong message to their rivals. Abia State also secured passage to the semi-finals, finishing second in the pool.

Pool B produced another highlight as Delta State outclassed Edo, winning both fixtures without conceding a single point. Edo, however, did enough to advance as runners-up after their earlier victory.

Semi-Final Lineup (September 1):

Girls:

SF1: Edo State (1st Pool A) vs Rivers State (2nd Pool B)

SF2: Delta State (1st Pool B) vs Abia State (2nd Pool A)

Boys:

Dr. Ademola Are, President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), hailed the performances

“The level of talent and passion displayed by these young athletes has been incredible. It reflects the growing depth of rugby in Nigeria. The NRFF is committed to nurturing these talents, and we anticipate an even more exciting finals day. This is exactly the platform needed to build the future of Nigerian rugby.”
