Asaba, Nigeria – July 16, 2025
By Arinzechi Chukwunonso
Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, has expressed satisfaction with the successful kickoff of the 12th edition of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) National Swimming Championship, currently ongoing at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Swimming Arena in Asaba.
Speaking during a brief media interaction at the venue, Hon. Oborevwori reaffirmed Delta State’s unwavering commitment to youth sports development and pledged the state’s readiness to continue hosting future editions of the national event.
“Definitely, we’ll do it continuously,” he said. “This is the 12th edition, and we would love to host it again. The kids are happy, everybody is happy.”
Oborevwori emphasized the importance of the championship in the broader context of sports growth in the state and the nation, stressing its role in identifying and nurturing young talent who can go on to represent Nigeria internationally.
“This is very, very important for young boys and girls,” he noted. “By doing this, we discover talents—those we can groom to represent the country. We need them, and we must make provisions for them.”
When asked about the future of swimming in Delta State, Oborevwori expressed strong optimism, not just for the state, but for Nigeria’s potential to compete at the highest levels globally in aquatic sports.
The 12th CNS Swimming Championship, which was postponed by a day in observance of the national mourning for former President Muhammadu Buhari, officially began on July 16. Young swimmers from across the country are participating in various competitive events.
Delta State has built a strong reputation as a powerhouse for sports in Nigeria, and with its continued investment and support for national championships, it remains well-positioned to produce the next generation of sporting champions.
