The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant clemency to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Kalu made the call during a press briefing at the National Assembly following the inaugural meeting of the House Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
Commending President Tinubu for his commitment to the peace and development of the South-East, Kalu highlighted the President’s swift assent to the South East Development Commission Bill—an initiative that failed under previous administrations.
Suggesting a political rather than legal resolution to Kanu’s detention, Kalu stressed that releasing him would significantly curb insecurity and drive economic growth in the region.
“Only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had the courage to affirm that the South-East remains a vital part of Nigeria.
“His support for the SEDC gives us hope that key sectors, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and technology, will receive the government’s backing,” Kalu stated.
He proposed the establishment of a tech and innovation hub in the region, similar to Silicon Valley, to harness the creativity of young entrepreneurs.
He also linked persistent security challenges to Kanu’s detention, arguing that his release could de-escalate tensions.
“Those hiding under his name to justify criminal activities will lose that excuse. Security forces can then focus on real threats,” Kalu explained.
Appealing for a compassionate approach, Kalu urged the President to consider the broader benefits of Kanu’s release, stating that it would enhance peace and development in the South-East.
As calls for a political resolution intensify, all eyes remain on President Tinubu’s next move regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s fate.
