The Ebonyi State Government has approved an increase in the minimum wage of state civil servants from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, with immediate effect.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, announced the decision on Thursday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.

According to Omebe, the wage increase reflects the administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare across all categories of the workforce.“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement, as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” Omebe said.

In addition to the wage review, the EXCO also approved the implementation of the eight-year tenure policy for directors, which mandates the retirement of permanent secretaries and directors who have served for eight years on the same cadre. “The EXCO exhaustively deliberated on the issue and approved its implementation for the affected permanent secretaries and directors,” he added.

Omebe explained that the move was aimed at ensuring efficiency, accountability, and the injection of fresh leadership into the state’s civil service.
