The political landscape in Enugu took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as Governor Peter Mbah officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation about his political direction.

In a televised address, Governor Mbah described the move as a “break from the past” and a bold step toward redefining the politics and governance of Enugu State.

“Today, after long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” Mbah declared.

He said the decision was guided by the need to reshape Enugu’s political structure and secure a better future for the state’s people.

“Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past and to share a decision that will shape the road ahead,” he said.

“This concerns our values, how we organize ourselves politically, and how we secure the future of our project and our people. Leadership sometimes demands painful decisions in the service of higher principles and goals.”

Ahead of the governor’s announcement, all members of the Enugu State Executive Council had already defected to the APC.

The confirmation came through a video shared by Dan Nwomeh, Senior Media Aide to the Governor, showing jubilant cabinet members waving APC flags and chanting praises for President Bola Tinubu.

“Enugu State Cabinet Members join the APC with full chest along with Governor PN Mbah,” Nwomeh captioned the video.

The collective defection signals a major political realignment in Enugu, a state that has been a PDP stronghold since 1999.
