One person has died and another rescued after a late-night road crash involving a Peugeot J5 bus and a heavy-duty vehicle along the Kubwa/Suleja Road, opposite the Niger Barracks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to a press statement signed by Nkechi Isa of the Public Affairs Unit in the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), the accident occurred at about 9:21 p.m. on Wednesday when the Peugeot J5 bus, reportedly loaded with bags of groundnuts, rammed into the rear of a heavy-duty truck and immediately burst into flames.
Head of Operations, Search and Rescue at FEMD, Mr. Monday Adie, confirmed that two individuals were trapped inside the burning vehicle. Rescue efforts led to the extraction of both victims; however, the driver of the Peugeot J5 sustained fatal burns and was pronounced dead. His charred remains have since been released to his family for burial.
The lone survivor, who was also rescued from the burning vehicle, was taken to Asokoro General Hospital for treatment but was later discharged upon the request of his family.
The rescue operation, which lasted from 9:21 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. the following day, was a joint effort involving the FCT Fire Service, the Nigerian Army, and the FCT Police Command.
Reacting to the incident, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, appealed to motorists in the FCT to exercise greater caution while on the road, stressing the importance of maintaining vehicles in proper working condition.
He also urged residents to make use of the emergency toll-free number 112 in the event of any disaster or emergency situation.
