Police Commissioner Launches Weapon and Riot Control Training for FCT Officers Democracy Radio
By Sofiat Adenekan
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced a ban on scavenging activities within the territory.
Commissioner of Police, FCT, Olatunji Disu, disclosed this during a press briefing following the FCT Security Committee Meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
According to Disu, scavengers, commonly referred to as baban bola, will now only be permitted to operate within designated dumpsites located in the outskirts and sub-urban areas of the FCT.
He added that all security agencies have been instructed to enforce this directive, effective January 14, 2025.
Additionally, the committee has imposed a two-week suspension on the operations of pantaker markets across the FCT, starting Tuesday, January 14.
Pantaker markets are hubs for trading second-hand items and scrap materials, including furniture and home appliances.
The temporary suspension is intended to allow security agencies profile pantaker operators, ensuring that only legitimate businesses are permitted to operate within these markets.
The commissioner emphasized the FCTA’s commitment to prosecuting individuals involved in the vandalism of public infrastructure.
He stated that offenders would face charges of economic sabotage and, in severe cases, attempted murder.
“The activities of vandals pose significant risks to the safety and well-being of FCT residents.
For instance, the removal of manhole covers on roads has the potential to cause fatal accidents, particularly at night,” Disu explained.
He noted that existing penalties, such as fines or community service, have proven insufficient in deterring offenders.
The committee aims to implement stricter measures to address this recurring issue.
Furthermore, CP Disu urged residents to be vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding public infrastructure.
“Vandalizing public property is an attack on the shared resources of all FCT residents. If you see something, say something. Let us work together to protect government assets,” he said.
The FCTA’s actions underline its commitment to enhancing security and ensuring the orderly management of public resources in the territory.
