The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a stern warning to motorists who engage in traffic violations.

It listed the violations to include driving against traffic and running red lights while pledging strict enforcement measures, including vehicle impoundment and prosecution.

The warning, issued through the FCT Transportation Secretariat, comes amid growing concern over the increasing incidence of traffic infractions across Abuja.

The Director, Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Abdulateef Bello, says offenders will be prosecuted in Mobile Courts and penalized in accordance with the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.

“The FCT Transportation Secretariat has observed with concern the alarming rate at which motorists violate traffic regulations by driving against traffic and disobeying traffic signals,” the statement read. “Henceforth, any motorist found guilty of these offences will have their vehicles impounded and be arraigned before a Mobile Court.”

According to the 2023 regulations—specifically, Regulation 18, Nos. 172 and 173—violations such as driving against traffic and beating red lights carry financial penalties and possible additional sanctions.

Bello emphasizes the Administration’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws to enhance road safety and maintain order on the capital’s roads. He urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules to avoid sanctions.

The FCTA’s renewed enforcement drive is part of ongoing efforts to curb reckless driving and ensure the safety of road users across the Federal Capital Territory.
