The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested three suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Liberty Radio staffer, Azubuko Nwakama, at Panteka Market, Mpape.
Nwakama was attacked and robbed a year ago on June 14, 2024, with his mobile phone and other valuables stolen. Despite immediate investigative efforts, the device remained switched off, stalling tracking attempts.
Undeterred, detectives from the Mpape Division maintained surveillance on possible digital traces for over 12 months.
A statement on Sunday by the FCT Police Command says their persistence paid off on August 2, 2025, when the victim’s phone a Redmi 13C was switched on and swiftly traced to 32-year-old Mutari Lawal from Kano State, who was promptly arrested.
The statement by the PPRO, Josephine Adeh says during interrogation, Lawal admitted to stabbing Nwakama and robbing him alongside two accomplices, 22-year-old Dan’Asabe Ibrahim from Zamfara State and 18-year-old Danjuma Ibrahim, both of no fixed address in Mpape.
He revealed that he had taken the stolen phone to Kano, kept it switched off for a year, and only powered it on in August 2025 to erase its data and insert his SIM card before returning to Abuja.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, praised the “diligence, resilience, and professionalism” of the investigation team, stressing that the Command would remain relentless in pursuing justice no matter how long it takes.
“The long arm of the law is patient, persistent, and resolute. Criminals within the FCT have two options, to repent or relocate,” the CP warned.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding residents and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
