In a significant move to accelerate infrastructure development in Abuja’s satellite towns, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has officially flagged off the reconstruction and dualization of the Karu Road.

The road stretches from the Karu Interchange to the Custom Clinic Junction in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The road project is spearheaded by the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) under the leadership of its coordinator, Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu who stated that the dualisation is poised to be a transformative initiative for the Karu axis—one of the FCT’s most densely populated yet historically underdeveloped suburbs.

He said the effort aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which emphasizes inclusive development across both urban and rural communities.

Zulkiflu said the 5.4 kilometre project which includes: dual carriageway reconstruction,
Construction of lined drainage systems and installation of solar-powered street lights was awarded to Abdul Val Nigeria Ltd.

He said the project is slated for completion within 10 months, with the FCTA promising strict monitoring to ensure timely and quality delivery.

Speaking at the flag-off event, Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, emphasized the importance of infrastructural equity between the city center and the satellite towns.

“The President has made a promise to develop both the city and the towns. Karu is a satellite town not by name, but by the lack of infrastructure it has suffered for years. This road will be reconstructed, dualized, and delivered on time,” Wike said.

The minister highlighted past interventions such as the rehabilitation of the Karu-Karshi-Jikwoyi road and the ongoing Karu water supply project, noting that these efforts are part of a deliberate strategy to uplift communities that have long been neglected.

The minister also muted the idea of constructing other potential expansions to connect adjoining roads and neighborhoods in Karu for a more comprehensive network in areas such as: Custom Clinic Junction to CBN Junction,
Custom Junction to EFCC and
NIA Quarters access roads

“It’s not about grammar—it’s about real connections with the people. There are still ‘small-small’ roads in Karu that need attention. If we can add them to this plan, we will truly make Karu whole,” Wike added.

In line with the administration’s promise of inclusive governance, the Minister urged the contractor to prioritize local content in workforce recruitment.

“Give the youth in Karu opportunities to work. Let them be part of building their own future. This road must not only be for them but by them,” he said.
