The Federal Government has awarded 50 million naira, to Nigeria’s Best Teacher of the Year, alongside a brand-new car and other incentives, aimed at improving teacher welfare and raising professional standards across the country.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Alausa, at the National Teachers’ Summit 2026 in Abuja.
Beyond the federal reward, state governments also pledged support.
The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, donated a new car to the overall winner, while Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, promised a fully furnished two-bedroom apartment. The Kebbi State Governor added an extra N5 million for each of the other award-winning teachers.
Merit-Based Selection
According to Dr. Alausa, the awards followed a transparent and merit-driven process. Each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory nominated three teachers. From these entries, 12 national finalists emerged six from basic education and six from senior secondary schools.
Each of the 12 finalists received N25 million, while the overall winner, Solanke Taiwo was awarded N50 million.
The minister described the initiative as a national statement on the value of teachers, stressing that the profession must be recognised and respected to improve learning outcomes.
EduRevamp Reform Launched
At the summit, the ministry also introduced EduRevamp, a nationwide continuous professional development programme designed to improve teaching quality.
The programme is open to both public and private school teachers and includes:
• A teacher-focused digital learning platform
• Distribution of over 60,000 tablets
• Plans for zero-data access to approved training platforms
• Reforms to strengthen professional registration and career progression
• Performance-based incentives for public school teachers who complete certified training
Focus on Long-Term Education Outcomes
Education experts note that while financial rewards boost morale, sustained reform, training access, and career progression pathways remain critical to long-term improvements in Nigeria’s education system.
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the government’s commitment, stating that teachers are central to national development strategy.
The summit, chaired by the First Lady of Nigeria, drew support from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, with state leaders pledging continued efforts to improve teacher welfare and education quality nationwide.
