It was a disappointing night for African football at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, as both Nigeria and South Africa were eliminated in the Round of 16, ending their campaigns in disheartening fashion.
In Santiago, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4–0 defeat to hosts Argentina. Alejo Sarco opened the scoring early in the match, before Maher Carrizo netted a brace to put the game beyond reach. Mateo Silvetti added a late fourth to seal Argentina’s emphatic victory. Despite several efforts on goal, Nigeria failed to make an impact, bowing out of the tournament and leaving Morocco as Africa’s sole remaining representative.
Elsewhere, South Africa’s Amajita were also sent packing after a 3–1 loss to Colombia. Mfundo Vilakazi briefly restored hope for the South Africans by converting from the penalty spot to level the game, but Neiser Villareal’s two goals ensured Colombia advanced to the quarterfinals.
With the results, Argentina will next face Mexico, while Colombia will take on Spain in Saturday’s quarterfinal fixtures in Santiago.
The twin defeats mark a major setback for African teams at this year’s competition, as the continent’s quest for glory now rests squarely on the shoulders of Morocco.
